At Rock Pool, we are constantly inspired by the courage and resilience of those who participate in our programmes. While we train practitioners to facilitate these life-changing courses, but we rarely hear directly from participants. That’s why, when we came across this heartfelt social media post, we wanted to share it.
This deeply personal story highlights the transformative power of the Domestic Abuse Recovery Toolkit and serves as a beacon of hope for anyone considering seeking support.
A Participant’s Journey
"Today, I completed my final session of a 12-week Domestic Abuse Adult Recovery Programme run by The Susie Project, which provides trauma-informed psycho-educational support to people recovering from domestic abuse. The programme looks at automatic negative thinking patterns and balances this with positive affirmation techniques – basically, how we think affects how we ultimately behave. The Recovery Toolkit used as a resource is about restoring belief and confidence in the individual and their abilities."
This participant joined the programme with trepidation, unsure if they belonged in the room after years of living with the aftermath of historic abuse. They shared how the resurfacing of financial abuse had reignited difficult emotions and self-doubt. However, through the support of their facilitator and fellow group members, they found acceptance, understanding, and the tools needed to rebuild their confidence.
"I quickly realised that we are all deserving of help and support, no matter what our experiences were, or when they took place. We have formed an amazing bond and have supported and inspired each other by the strength and resilience we’ve demonstrated in the most challenging of personal circumstances."

The Recovery Toolkit: A Life-Changing Resource
The Domestic Abuse Recovery Toolkit, written by Sue Penna, has been empowering survivors of domestic abuse for 20 years. It’s designed to help participants regain control over their lives, improve their emotional wellbeing, and develop strategies to protect themselves from future harm.
"When I wrote the Recovery Toolkit 20 years ago while volunteering at a refuge, I couldn’t have anticipated that it would still be going strong and helping so many women across the UK. But the real credit goes to those, like this participant, who take the brave step to join." – Sue Penna, CEO Rock Pool
Since its inception, the programme has delivered lasting change for thousands of participants, helping them rebuild their lives with renewed confidence and resilience.
