Join Rock Pool founder Sue Penna for this one-hour webinar exploring the deeply damaging impact of coercion and control in abusive relationships — and why understanding this pattern of abuse is critical for anyone working in safeguarding, health, social care and related fields.
While domestic abuse is often associated with physical violence, coercive and controlling behaviour sits at the heart of many abusive relationships. This session will explore the scale and reality of coercive control in the UK, the trauma it can leave behind for adults and children, and why it can be so difficult for victims to recognise, name or escape.
Drawing on research, practice insights and trauma-informed thinking, Sue will introduce key ideas that help practitioners better understand the dynamics of coercion and control and its lasting impact.
During the webinar we will explore:
- What coercive and controlling behaviour is — and how it operates within relationships
- Why coercive control is often the most dangerous form of domestic abuse
- How patterns of abuse develop and escalate over time
- The psychological impact of coercive control on victims and survivors
- The trauma responses that can emerge in those experiencing abuse
- The impact of coercive control on children and family dynamics
- What research and domestic homicide reviews tell us about missed opportunities for intervention
- How trauma-informed approaches can support safer, more effective responses
All are welcome to join this free one-hour session, which is ideal for frontline professionals working across health, social care, safeguarding, education, criminal justice and the voluntary sector.
Please note: This webinar is not formal training. It is designed to provide insight, reflection and discussion for professionals who are new to the topic or interested in learning more.
