Why do some children struggle to regulate, engage or feel safe in school?

This webinar explores how behaviour that can be challenging, confusing or hard to manage is often rooted in early experiences of trauma.

With a strong focus on school and classroom settings, trauma expert Sue Penna will introduce a trauma-informed lens to help you better understand what sits beneath behaviour — and how to respond in ways that support safety, connection and learning.

While particularly relevant for education professionals, the insights shared will apply across any setting supporting children and young people.

In this session, we’ll explore:

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their lasting impact
  • How trauma affects child development, behaviour and relationships
  • Understanding behaviour as communication
  • Recognising trauma responses in school and other settings
  • Practical ways to respond in a trauma-informed, supportive way

Key takeaways from the session:

  • Better understand how children’s experiences shape their behaviour
  • Feel more confident recognising trauma-related responses
  • Have practical insight into responding in ways that support regulation, safety and engagement

This webinar is ideal for:

  • Teachers and school staff
  • Pastoral, SEND and safeguarding leads
  • Family support workers
  • Also relevant for anyone working with children and young people across social care, early help and the voluntary sector
